What Happens Before You Enroll Your First Clinical Trial Patient?

Starting a clinical trial involves more than identifying eligible patients. Before enrollment begins, several important steps help ensure that the study is properly prepared and compliant.
What Does Study Startup Involve?
Although requirements vary by trial, the process typically includes:
1. Site Evaluation
The sponsor reviews the physician's qualifications, patient population, facilities, and ability to conduct the study.
2. Contracts and Budgets
The research site and sponsor negotiate the clinical trial agreement and study budget.
3. Regulatory Approvals
The study must receive appropriate Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval, and required regulatory documentation must be completed.
4. Staff Training and Preparation
The physician and research team review the protocol, complete required training, and prepare study procedures, equipment, and documentation.
5. Site Initiation
The sponsor or CRO typically conducts a site initiation visit to confirm the team is ready. Enrollment begins only after the site receives authorization to proceed.
Who Manages All of This?
A Site Management Organization (SMO) can coordinate much of the startup process, including regulatory documentation, training logistics, and sponsor communications.
The physician remains actively involved in reviewing the protocol, understanding investigator responsibilities, and ensuring the site is prepared.
Altitude Clinical Research helps physicians navigate study startup so they can approach their first clinical trial with confidence.
